The issue is, that you have not set up the gtk3 theme in xubuntu.
It should better be done by xubuntu desktop, I think.
So it's anyway a kind of bug.

The following has helped:
  cp -r /usr/share/themes/greybird/gtk-3.0 ~/.config

For root account you need:
  sudo cp -r /usr/share/themes/greybird/gtk-3.0 /root/.config

There were the problem with black areas with other gtk3 application as well,
e.g. evince.
