Title:
Dash and HUD take too long to open

Status in Unity:
  Expired
Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
I invoke the Dash with the super key, and quickly start typing the
name of file or application I want to open. But the Dash opens with an
animation, sometimes with lag, and the dash won't capture keystrokes
right away. Especially when typing quickly, the Dash won't capture as
much as my first three keystrokes.

When trying to work quickly, this causes problems. I expect to be able
to quickly type Super C-H-R Enter, and that should reliably launch
Chromium. Because of the lag, the Dash might only capture "R" and
  launch Rhythmbox instead.

This is also now a problem with the HUD in 12.04.
