Workaround:
1. Install compizconfig-settings-manager
2. Run: ccsm
3. Explore the many options and remove/change the keyboard shortcuts that are
conflicting.

** Package changed: unity (Ubuntu) => compiz (Ubuntu)

Bug description:
  Ubuntu 11.10

"ALT + circumflex" can be mapped in the keyboard settings despite
being reserved for the new ALT + tab extended functionality, making it
execute two functions at once with severe side effects (GUI freeze,
but keys are still responsive -> key smashing during freeze results in
  possible destruction of user data).
