Title:
Launcher quicklists lack information about multiple windows open
Status in Unity:
New
Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
Confirmed
Bug description:
Currently, Unity launcher quicklists show the name of the application
instead of titles of its open windows when we right-click its icon in
the launcher (see 1 in attached png). Showing the name of the
application in the quicklist is pointless and redundant because its
name is already presented to the user when one hovers the pointer over
the launcher icon before right-clicking for the quicklist.
Also, in order to change windows or to go to a particular one it is
necessary to use keyboard shortcuts like Alt+Tab and Super+W or to
click up to three times (twice the icon in the launcher and then a
thumbnail if the application is not focused), so mouse-oriented users
are in disadvantage. An easier and faster way to learn which instances
of an application are open and to quickly access them is still lacking
in the launcher.
The application name in the quicklist should change dynamically to
show the open instances of the application, e.g. from "Mozilla
Firefox" to "Launchpad - Mozilla Firefox" (like 2 in the attached
png). In addition to a open windows list, after the bug #688830 is
fixed it would allow the user to select a particular window in any
workspace with just a single right-click, reducing to one the high
number of clicks currently necessary to go to a particular window in a
particular workspace. This would expand the functionality of the
quicklists and improve productivity and could also provide a basis for
a proper integration of the launcher with Compiz's window preview
plugin (see 3 in attached png) and a fix of bug #817300.
Using Unity 3.8.16 on Ubuntu Natty Narwhal.
