I have the same issue with my laptop. The funny thing is that it has started happening when I changed to a new monitor. I thought it was because using HDMI, but it also happens with VGA.
The new monitor is a Samsung Syncmaster S23B550. The old monitor (where it worked without problems) is a Samsung Syncmaster T220. With the T220 and VGA I could close the lid and work with my monitor.
