Perhaps it is related to the fact that 'Quantal Package List Contains Sources That Cannot Be Downloaded' (Bug #1003042 refers: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/1003042). Basically when you use APTITUDE to to a similar thing you get:
W:Failed to fetch http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/quantal/main/source/Sources 404 Not Found , W:Failed to fetch http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/quantal/main/binary-amd64/Packages 404 Not Found , W:Failed to fetch http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/quantal/main/binary-i386/Packages 404 Not Found , E:Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead. Unfortunately, we cant use Ubuntu-bug to report the error because it doesn't stay active long enough to capture the PID.
