I can confirm this bug for 2.8 on Ubuntu 12.04. I am also seeing it on a different 12.04 machine on the repository 2.6.12 version.

When I minimize the gimp window, it goes toward the launcher and then disappears. With no gimp app icon in the launcher, I cannot open the gimp app window again. My only recourse is to go to the dash and launch gimp again. I think the gimp app icon should remain in the launcher as long as the gimp app is open." Same problem in my case.
