Thank you for your bug report, do you have lot of documents in that
directory? the Template dir is what nautilus use to build its context
menu "create new document", if you have hundred of files in there it
will create hundred of template entries...

Title:
  Changing XDG_TEMPLATES_DIR rapidly slows nautilus start

Status in “nautilus” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  When i set in user-dirs.dirs
  XDG_DOCUMENTS_DIR="$HOME/doc"
  XDG_TEMPLATES_DIR="$HOME/doc"
  nautilus hangs for few seconds when starting

  This setting works flawlessly
  XDG_DOCUMENTS_DIR="$HOME/doc"
  XDG_TEMPLATES_DIR="$HOME/"

  Hope it narrows down source of the problem
