This is still true for Precise Pangolin.
Wiped an iPod Classic on a Mac, then connected it to an Ubuntu box with
Rhythmbox.
Trying to save tracks to it would result in crashing Rhythmbox. No
warning, no explanation, just crashes.
Yes, this indeed is a bug.

I read in the ubuntuusers.de-wiki that you could only write on the
iPod-filesystem if hfsplus is installed. Rhythmbox doesn't warn you at
all if you try to write on your iPod without hfsplus installed.
