when having the issue with kdm could you also add the .xsession-errors from a buggy session on the bug? but it just seems the issue not lightdm if you get non starting sessions with KDM, it seems you still hit a similar issue after login, so it could be that any 3d use with your drivers are non working and it just happens that kdm is not doing anything fancy to hit the issue?
