oh, unity doesn't use that applet but "indicator-sound", is that package installed for you? do you have any error in .xsession-errors?

The Gnome Sound applet disappeared from the top panel. Additionally, if I try to manually run it, nothing happens and no errors are given: --- $ gnome-sound-applet --- The same happens with gdb: --- (gdb) run Starting program: /usr/bin/gnome-sound-applet [Thread debugging using libthread_db enabled] Using host libthread_db library "/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libthread_db.so.1". [New Thread 0xb69eeb40 (LWP 4068)] [New Thread 0xb5fffb40 (LWP 4069)] --- The sound is working, e.g. Rhythmbox plays music. Let me know if you need additional information.
