Steps to reproduce: 1. Go to System -> Preferences -> Keyboard 2. Open Layouts tab, click Options... 3. Enable "Add Esperanto circumflexes" (Dvorak or QWERTY, doesn't matter, I use QWERTY). 4. Make sure "Key to choose 3rd level is enabled" 5. Open Gedit, type additional Esperanto characters by pressing s, c, u, j, h, g with 3rd level key. You should get ŝ, ĉ, ŭ, ĵ, ĥ, ĝ correspondingly. 6. Back in keyboard preferences window, enable "Enable extra typographic characters" located under "Miscellaneous compatibility options" 7. In Gedit, type the same sequence again. You'll get §, ©, ŭ, „, ĥ, ĝ — half of the characters in question are replaced. Desired behaviour: The best possible thing would be to ensure we have an option to choose which setting overrides another in this case. I suppose it's a lot of work. My point is: people that are enabling Esperanto circumflexes do need those and do know what they are doing. I suppose they would rather have Esperanto characters working at the cost of §, © and „ in "extra typographic characters". Perhaps a note in the preferences window warning about this override would be nice, too.
