I think it is totally ok to have the new version installed. Ubuntu detects that it was installed and it just wont be updated when webkit 1.8.1. eventually reaches the official repos.
I'm wondering what is commune in our install of Ubuntu, that we had this bug, and it was not reported by anybody else. Did you upgrade from Ubuntu 11.10? Do you use an nVidia grafical card, that is not supported?
