Note that Evolution has had a --force-shutdown argument on the command- line for a long time which, when executed, kills all Evolution-related processes running as the same user.

The application is still resonding i.e. checking for mail and calendar reminders, but all button, text fields and menus do not respond. If you try to close the compose window using the unity window buttons, the save change diaglog opens but these buttons do not work either (mouse or keyboard). The only way to stop the application is xkill or kill.
