I believe these problems are fixed in recent versions of software-

Title:
software-center caches too aggressively
Status in “software-center” package in Ubuntu:
Invalid
Bug description:
Binary package hint: software-center
Michael recently fixed a bug whereby packages with a "." in their name
would not properly display their icon in the software center listings.
(The fluendo codecs, as an example) However, the icons still failed
to show up until I manually deleted my software center cache and
restarted the app.
Caching in general seems to be a bit too aggressive as it can be ~1
hour before new apps show up, for instance. It would be nice if there
were some sort of "Reload" button.
