You also need the network-manager-pptp package.
Once this is installed, do you still have a problem in Precise?

Title:
VPN connections do not work
Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
Binary package hint: network-manager
First, "ubuntu-bug network-manager" reports "The problem cannot be
reported: This is not a genuine Ubuntu package" even though dpkg -S
reports it as such.
I have VPN pptp installed and configured. the service providers
provides reliable service to Windows (XP and 7), but when my Lucid
tries to connect nothing ha[[ens - no reprts, nothing. However, it is
clear it has not connected since the service that should then be
available are not.
Under Hardy, it also did not succeed in signing up, but at least there
was a message to say so and a starting point from which to search for
errors.
Is VPN EVER going to be fixed?
