Public bug reported:

When a new text document is opened the first page is in the top right
corner of the new window. The ruler only shows over that half of the
window. The top left corner of the window is blank, and wasted space.
I cannot find a setting that affects this.

A few existing documents also open like this but some also open as one
would expect (one-up) - until with no apparent reason they become two-
up. Thank goodness the screen is wide enough to find the text pane.

Sorry, but I do not feel like taking the time to set up a debug version
and stomp through the code to find the bug. My take is it's related to
the almost-as-annoying feature that spots the pages two-up as the user
zooms out.

This laptops video [Compaq A900] is screwy, or gives Ubuntu headaches
from release to release. I had an xrandr script that corrected previous
release problems, and at or nearly the same time as this display issue
the boot process began denying the screen resolution; there are messages
saying something like the system software is not able to get the bounds
from the hardware. I had to update the xrandr script with settings for
the builtin screen now and must run it every boot.

I mention that because it is possible that LibreOffice is pulling
display (view rect) info from somewhere that retains incorrect numbers.

I would have pulled the .debs to back off to LibreOffice 3.4 but Apache
OpenOffice got in first and does not have this problem.
