I have switched to using a MiFi access point, so I no longer care about the USB solution.

Frequently, the connection drops and cannot be reinstated without unplugging and plugging back in the USB adapter. It is still listed as an available connection in the Network Manager gui during this time, but attempting to select it leads to immediate connection failure. There is no problem (so far) with 802.11 wireless connections or wired connections. Sometimes I can get the CDMA connection to work once right after insertion into the USB port, but if it loses signal for some reason, it will again lock up. Seems like a race condition.
