And this is when I start to think "it's way too much past midnight and I'm 
getting too annoyed with these things".
Fixed with the same heavy-handed way I sorted out the lightdm.

Bug description:
  lightdm failed to install or uninstall properly.  While it was
  installed I could not login to my system.  stopping the service and
  then removing the package and installing gdm fixed the issue.  Not as
  pretty but at least I can login.
