In Ubuntu 12.04 you can create multiple connection definitions with the
same ESSID. When the ESSID is seen, the applet provides a submenu under
the ESSID name listing all the connection definitions by the names given
to them in the connection editor.

Title:
NM no longer supports more than one setting for an access point

Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
Up until Ubuntu 10.10, you could have more than 1 setting for a single
wireless access point. Now, while I can create those profiles, I no
longer can select anything but the first one. I would have made you
some pretty screen shots to show the difference, but neither ubuntu
10.10 nor 11.04 allow the prtscrn button to work when the network
modal selector is selected from the menu bar.
