Confirmed the same symptom for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, using Firefox versions up to and including 13.0.1. This froze the desktop session to the point of not being able to switch out of Xorg to an alternate terminal. Turning on smooth scrolling reproduces the symptom regularly.
