I have no longer the hardware available, so I cannot test the newer
versions. But I am quite sure this has been resolved for a long time
now. Thus I would be completely ok with closing as FIXED.

  1) Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic)
  2) network-manager 0.8~a~git.20091013t193206.679d548-0ubuntu1
  3)+4) I don't know if it is an issue in the Network Manager or somewhere 
else, but when I start my system wireless network in my house is not in the 
list of available networks in the Network Manager applet till I run 'modprobe 
-r iwl3945 && modprobe iwl3945'. I have the Intel 3945 wi-fi card.
