I upgraded to 9.10 rc and this is now no longer the case (although it did work 1 out of about 100 attempts). If I use the command line client to open the connection it works perfectly so the problem seems to be with network manager itself. I run the command client with: sudo openvpn --config vpn.conf If I import this openvpn conf file into network manager and then try connecting with it I see the following notification popup: The VPN connection XXXX failed because the VPN service failed to start.
