I was still having some odd issues, such as freezes after compiz
--replace so I installed Openbox. Freezes disappeared.

Steps to reproduce the freezes
-while in a Unity desktop session cast compiz --replace in a terminal

Workaround
Install Openbox and attempt to re-log in, there'll be an "Openbox/Gnome"
desktop option in the log-in menu. I've chosen that and there is no weirdness
(missing universal App menu and missing dock) as if you were to enter openbox
--replace from terminal running an Unity instance.

Results
Flickering issues (some?, all?) are gone, as when I run straight Openbox. No
crashes to tell of after a day's worth of operation.

Comment
I'm not using Metacity because it produces random crashes and flickering. See:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/metacity/+bug/1031609
