I've suffered this bug many times (on various Ubuntu releases), but stubbornly I hope every time jockey will work. FWIW, I selected option 1 "ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver (post-release updates)". After rebooting, my screen would go blank after loading ubuntu (the last thing I saw was the splash screen with the dots).
To solve this, I: -booted in system recovery mode -dropped to shell prompt -mounted the filesystem (I don't know why it was only available as read-only): mount -o rw,remount / -removed all packages with "fglrx" string in its name: apt-get purge fglrx* -reboot And everything was back to normal.
