This might be related to bug #1015010 - the libmtp library isn't up-to- date enough to support the S3 (although in my case I still can't mount the phone, even with the latest libmtp library).

I've seen other MTP-related bug reports, but none with these exact symptoms (ie. showing first-level directories only).
