This seems to be fixed in Debian now http://bugs.debian.org/cgi- bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=669961 and upstream in Gnome https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=673833 - it'd be great if it could somehow make its way into Ubuntu 12.04, but it's probably too late for that now.
