The workspace switcher disappears when you change the virtual size of
the desktop.
How to reproduce:
1. Install CompizConfig Settings Manager (CCSM)
2. Open CCSM
3. General Options --> Desktop Size
4. Change Horizontal Virtual Size from 2 to 1.
5. Logout and login again
