gnome-screensaver has dropped support for the "leave a message" feature.
If it comes back, it will probably be implemented differently (maybe via
gdm/gnome-shell integration).

Title:
username missing from 'leave a message' dialog on unity screen saver
Status in “gnome-screensaver” package in Ubuntu:
Invalid
Bug description:
Binary package hint: unity
When the screensaver in unity is activated, there is an option to
leave a message for the user. When the actual dialog box comes up and
one can enter the message the caption is "leave a message for". It
appears that the dialog uses the comment field from /etc/password. If
that field is left blank the leave-a-message dialog should fail over
to the login name.
Steps to reproduce.
1. leave comment field blank
2. activate screen saver
3. leave a message
