Network Manager causes frequent disconnects using WWAN 3G network

Binary package hint: network-manager
Connecting to Verizon 3G WWAN network using USB760 modem. The
connection works flawlessly and I am able to connect to the internet,
however, after an apparently random time (minutes not hours) the
connection drops and the following messages can be seen in the syslog.

I am able to reconnect using the network manager applet, however after
another random period of time the connection drops again.
OS: Ubuntu 9.10 64bit. (0.8~a~git.20091013t193206.679d548-0ubuntu1)
