Thanks for your reply. It is interesting that my situation was not unique.
I'm surprised that any application, especially those available through the Ubuntu Software Centre, would have to make any changes for the Unity user interface. When the other hang problem I'm having with FireFox occurs again I'll attempt to create a bug report using ubuntu-bug -w . Oh! and guess what? While typing this email I pressed Ctrl-Superkey-D to get to my desktop to launch a LibreOffice writer odt file and the icon that appeared in the launcher was not the writer icon but the LibreOffice suite icon. Please see sections of captured screenshots below: Mike I was expecting the icon second from the bottom of the launcher to be P.S. I wish there was some way I could contribute to the magnificent work of the Ubuntu team. I'm a pensioner, had a career in mainframe Systems Software development and am nowhere near as smart as the Ubuntu team members. Firefox with several tabs was running on my desktop and I had also launched Libreoffice calc. When I clicked on the icon for Libreoffice calc in the launcher nothing happened. Also its icon was white and did not have the typical spreadsheed pattern. I ran ubuntu-bug -w on a terminal but clicking on the Libreoffice calc icon in the launcher did not produce a bug report. So instead I clicked a Firefox window which produced a report. I had to exit Firefox to be able to bring Libreoffice calc to run on my desktop. Other observations: I like Ubuntu 12.04 Unity but it continues to have problems in applications sometimes hanging or misbehaving when they are doing things that are not simple. This has happened too often with FireFox and occasionally with LibreOffice writer. The latter had a problem today when its windows to cut/paste/save popped up blank. Sorry if the above is not helpful but I'm a newbie to the process of reporting a bug.
