Cannot reboot or shutdown from lightdm

Bug description:
Intermittently I cannot reboot/restart from lightdm or from the
"Shutdown..." menu on the Unity panel.
Unlike bug #984163m, I have not installed gnome-shell and I am running
unity-2d.
I tailed the syslog and logs in /var/log/lightdm and the only thing I
saw when I attempted a reboot, were the following messages in syslog:

The lightdm logs were silent.
It is very intermittent. Is there any information I could gather the next
time it happens to help in the debug?
