After installing Ubuntu 12.04 using my wireless connection I was unable to
just plug in my ethernet and have that work. Instead, after some research and
guessing, I found that it had to be turned on using sudo ifconfig eth0 up. This
is not user-friendly and must be fixed. Here is the relevant thread:
