You have been subscribed to a public bug:
Whenever I access the appearance settings to change the background, the
cursor hides when I keep it at rest on the thumbnail of background
image. But when it is moved the pointer becomes visible for a second
and hides again. Not only the appearance menu but also the system
setting option. Whenever the pointer is at rest at an option the
pointer becomes invisible. This makes Ubuntu a tough thing to learn for
a new user who has only used the Windows.
