Closing this bug: somehow the global-messages-db.sqlite got confused,
most likely because of a spam email that contained exactly 5000(!)
recipients. Removing the global-messages-db.sqlite and global-messages-
db.sqlite-journal files solved the problem.

Title:
thunderbird increases memory from startup until whole system freezes
because of lack of memory
Status in “thunderbird” package in Ubuntu:
Invalid
Bug description:
Since 2 days (it started before upgrade to 12.10), out of the blue,
thunderbird started consuming all available memory from startup. It happened on
2 machines independently (with the same email accounts).
It may be a race condition caused by some email.
I hoped to get some debugging info by running 'ubuntu-bug <pid-of-
running-thunderbird>'. Not sure if the information collected is
sufficient.
