You need a path. Something like this:

gsettings set org.compiz.core:/org/compiz/profiles/unity/plugins/core/
vsize 3

** Changed in: compiz (Ubuntu)
       Status: New => Invalid

** Changed in: unity (Ubuntu)

Title:
  It doesn't seem possible to configure the number of workspaces

Bug description:
  I was trying to update the workspace pages in the Ubuntu Desktop Guide for
Quantal:
  https://help.ubuntu.com/12.04/ubuntu-help/shell-workspaces.html

  But I can't figure out how to change the number of workspaces.

  I found a schema, but maybe it really needs a schema path to be set in order
for it to work?
    <schema id="org.compiz.core" gettext-domain="compiz">

  Like this one for instance:
    <schema path="/org/gnome/desktop/interface/"
id="org.gnome.desktop.interface">

  $ gsettings set org.compiz.core vsize 3
  Schema 'org.compiz.core' is relocatable (path must be specified)

  I even tried this:
  $ dconf write /org/compiz/core/vsize 3

  but that didn't seem to have any useful effect.
