There was an error message that compiz crashed. I opened the system settings via desktop appearance (changed the wallpaper which worked). I check my display settings for my monitor then checked for updates and installed the updates. I re-started the computer and desktop doesn't appear. I had a similar problem with the last updates from 12.10 alpha3 where there was no desktop. On this computer I ran Unity 2D.
