This is extra annoying because when the hw mute is enabled, you will
hear no sound, regardless of the ALSA mute state.

When the hw mute is out of sync with the ALSA mute, you don't need to
reboot, you can just bring it back in sync by manipulating the ALSA
mute.

The hw mute status is toggled when the hw mute button is pressed (though
that also generates a keyboard event). Also, when using the hardware
volume keys the mute state will be disabled.
