A recent update to Quantal caused some really annoying behaviors. The problem was that the wallpaper I previously was using (default in Quantal Alpha3) was removed from the collection of possible wallpapers. Because the desired wallpaper could not be found - the following issues were observed. 1) The screen resolution appeared to display 800x600 even though 1280x768 was selected. 2) The area where the wallpaper should have been displayed was black and the unity menu backround was blue. 3) There were horrible artefacts and/or visible noise that degraded the quality feel of the desktop itself.
