Skype icon doesn't appear in the notification area

Bug description:
When I start skype, the skype icon appears briefly in the notification
area and disappears. Once that happens there is no way to see the
running instance of skype. The workaround that worked for me is to
start another instance and do a pkill on skype and then start again.
But even after that some times the icon disappears and if I ever close
the skype windows, I will lose access to the running instance.
