Same problem but in 12.04.... it takes a long time to
shutdown/reboot/shut session. But if i shutdown/reboot/shut session with
a simply script from terminal it takes less time. Also the shortcut
Ctrl+Alt+Back closes the session inmediatly.

Title:
  Slow system shutdown

Status in “gnome-session” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
I have the latest version of Ubuntu updated repeatedly over the course of
about the past year to see if a new fix would solve the problem.
I'm sorry, I'm a new user relatively to be able to classify what program is
running or whatnot.

I have Windows XP pro and Ubuntu (8.04?) both on my computer. The
problem doesn't happen with Windows (or isn't that notable
  (approximately 5-10 seconds)).

When I push the Ubuntu shutdown button, it takes about 60 seconds (most
recently timed to 62 seconds so I'm not generalizing that much), from the time
I click the button to the environment showing the pad that says
"shutdown/restart" etc. After that the computer shuts down in about 10 seconds.
It's also frozen until the shutdown pad appears. The mouse moves, but thats it.
There's about 60 percent free space on the Ubuntu sector of hard drive, 25
percent free on the Windows sector. This has consistently occurred with my
latest update from feisty fawn. I LIKE the new version otherwise which is why I
haven't simply gone back to feisty fawn.
With exception to a "no sound" problem, it is a lot better than the older
Ubuntu environment that I had.

The "pretty lights" on my computer that shows when the hard drive is
active don't flicker at all during the 60 second wait.

The previous version of Ubuntu that I had loaded

My computer is stick built, AMD Athlon 64 3800 dual processor, 2 gig
  RAM, geForce 7600 GS
