1) Double-click HTML file -> launches FireFox
2) FireFox File|Print...|Print to File

So maybe the bug is in FireFox? Or maybe CUPS?

I installed Chromium and performed the above two steps again. I got the
same print dialog, but the correct result ... parentheses were printed.
So it appears that the bug is in FireFox.

So the question now ... is this the correct channel to log bugs in
FireFox since it is the "Browser du Jour" for Ubuntu? Or is it done in
another way?

  Printing webpage to pdf file loses parentheses

Status in “cups” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  When printing ...  to a pdf file [feedback.pdf] ... an html file
  [feedback.html] containing parentheses within equations ... the
  parentheses are not printed. Other parentheses in the document not
  associated with equations are printed.
