OpenGL based games crash randomly

Bug description:
Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati
When I launch an OpenGL based game, no matter which one it is, it
crashes randomly, sometimes in 5 seconds, sometimes in 5 minutes, I
know it is not the hardware because OpenGL based games in Windows XP
have no issues running for hours at a time, I have tried running the
games with compiz turned both on and off, and there is no difference,
what is ironic is that compiz (which also uses OpenGL) has no problems
running at all.
The graphics card is a PCIE X16 Radeon X300, the system is a IBM
ThinkPad T43 with a 1.8 GHZ Pentium M and 2 GB of ram
