You have been subscribed to a public bug:
After logging in (on 12.04), the desktop background is shown (and is
functional, in the sense that I can right click on it and interact with
it properly) but the unity shell (menubar, app bar to the left etc) does
not load.
Attempting to run unity --reset from a terminal session causes pages of errors,
all of the style:
"GConf Error Configuration server couldn't be contacted: D-BUS error: Did not
receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send
a replay, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout
expired, or the network connection was broken."
Finally:
compiz (core) - Warn: unhandled ConfigureNotify on 0x2600090!
compiz (core) - Warn: this should never happen. you should probably file a bug
about this.
It's probably also worth noting that a lot of things which should be
instant are incredibly slow. I'm running on a Macbook Pro (from memory
it's a 5,1) with a SSD installed, and the actual boot process takes
several minutes. That's probably not a bug, but what may well be is
that many terminal commands are impossibly slow (for example, apt-get
upgrade hangs on Unpacking replacement _... for what appears to be
eternity and won't respond to ctrl+c for SIGINT, necessitating a reboot)
