I'm using, since ubuntu 8.04, samba and winbind to integrate a workstation into an AD domain, as described here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ActiveDirectoryWinbindHowto I'm able to use gdm, and now lightdm, to login as a domain user, by authenticating with pam_winbind or pam_krb5.
The only problem I have found so far with lightdm is reported here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lightdm/+bug/850298 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to lightdm in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/791336 Title: Add support for Samba's Active Directory integration Status in Light Display Manager: Triaged Status in “lightdm” package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: LightDM needs enterprise support to be successful. It is possible that a Linux machine is part of an Active Directory and has winbindd running. So it needs to be aware of this and get the domain information it needs and support for UNC. This can be implemented using libwbclient or wbinfo binary which are both part of the Samba Software Suite.
