This happened to me after a fresh install of beta2. Everything was well
and good (used for days with Unity) before I installed xfce4. I used
xfce4 for a few days, then tried to switch back. I couldn't select the
Unity WM option (unclickable) in lightdm. So I completely uninstalled
xfce4 and now lightdm doesn't show any options (should go automatically
to Unity) but just loops back to itself.

I checked ~/.dmrc and it says session=xfce which I change to ubuntu and
reloading lightdm, if I try to login again it rewrites ~/.dmrc back to
xfce and I'm bounced back to the login screen.

Title:
  lightdm doesn't load unity sessions

Status in “lightdm” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  12.04 Beta 1
  lightdm 1.1.7

Since a recent upgrade in lightdm is unable to login my Unity
sessions. Actually my Unity sessions were also missing after this
recent update. After installing ubuntu-desktop lightdm still is
unable to log in. After entering my credentials it just cycles back
to itself rather than booting the DE. I've worked around this by
using gdm which I activated with 'sudo dkpg-reconfigure lightdm' and
  choosing gdm from the menu.
