I thought that autologin made a difference, but it appears that I was wrong. This is more likely an X bug than LightDM-specific.

The only way to get things normal again is by restarting the lightdm service. It doesn't seem to happen every time, but it does happen a lot. I have also noticed that when manually logging in, the dmesg output on tty7 sometimes blends in with the desktop; for instance, a black box with a blinking cursor is shown, or when plugging in a USB thumb drive, the output from 'mount' will be displayed, until I move my cursor over that area. I'm running fully up-to-date Xubuntu 12.10 (no proposed packages though) on a laptop with Intel graphics (xserver-xorg-video-intel driver).
