Today, I tried "apt-get remove libreoffice-gtk" and the slow open persisted. Then reinstalled it.
I also ran update manager, haven't done this for about a month. That seemed to resolve the issue! apt-cache policy libreoffice-writer shows no new version so the fix must have been due to some other system component? It would be good to find out what actually fixed this. One could revert to an old system backup and try incremental updates. When opening a local copy of that file, the document is rendered instantly. As a reference, opening a networked pdf with acrobat is instantaneous. Our company had recently switched from NIS to LDAP name services. I also upgrade to 12.04 about the same time.
