Sorry I may be getting confused with my terminology. By Suspend I meant Sleep/Standby and not hibernation. I don't have any problems hibernating. But my swap partition is 5.4GB and my RAM is 4GB.

It does not suspend and it isn't possible to 'resume' from this state without a hard reset. This is happening frequently, so much so that I seldom attempt a suspend now and instead either shutdown or hibernate, neither of which are especially convenient with a laptop (but slightly more so than a forced hard reset!).
