Raymond,
I thought that my problem might be that my emachine laptop is to old
for unity (?) so I tried a clean install of lubuntu and was able to
get the sound working. Under lubuntu the new proprietary drivers
would not support my on board wireless modem [ATI IXP AC97], but I got
that working well by plugging in a USB wireless adapter that was
laying around in my computer junk drawer. With the older hardware
lubuntu is working much faster than ubuntu. All is well now.... I
thank you for your help.
David
